TAI CHI AS A MARTIAL ART

Tai Chi Chu'an, is a form or sequence of chi gong movements seamlessly strung together and encompasses lots of different Martial arts moves, Tai Chi is also sometimes referred to as moving meditation or Chinese Yoga, and is a well known and ancient martial art. In fact, translated it actually means 'the grand ultimate boxing'.It has also been shown to be very beneficial for health when practised correctly and has been practised in China for over 600 years, not only as a martial art but also as part of Daoism and a healthy lifestyle as I say. Below I'm teaching Tai Chi to a group for a Mayor's Office DVD:

About The Teacher

Nathan is a Personal Trainer (YMCA Level 3) nutritionist, (LOCN level 3) and has practised various styles of Martial arts for over 30 years (more if counting childhood too) and also holds advanced belts in Krav Maga and Nunchaku-Do for instance. He has practised Yang style Tai Chi for over 20 years and completed a Tai Chi Instructor Seminar in 2009 for JDIATCC UK.

In that 20 years he has had 3 Tai Chi teachers and often assisted teaching for two of them, he has worked as a Tai Chi choreographer for The Daily Mail, The Mayor's Office, and can even be seen performing Tai Chi on the TV series M.I. High, the episode called 'Op Flopsy' (photo above). He also earned a trophy in 2010 for British nunchaku combat champion (despite a last minute entry)

Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan

Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, meaning Yang [family] Grand Ultimate Boxing, is a traditional martial art from the Yang family in China, which was developed by top martial artists who had already achieved a high level of skill in other martial arts and sought to improve on what they had alreasy learned by developing a superior martial art. This is what they did by developing Tai Chi Chuan, a martial art which not only uses advanced principles that other martial arts don't use, but is a martial art that anyone who has the time can do. This is because it doesn't rely on big muscles or strength, as in fact it uses the opponent's strength against them and teaches us how to understand our own minds and bodies and the subtle internal life force energy we all have, aka chi. It is therefore not only very effective when learned properly, but is great for health of body, mind and spirit, as it not only strengthens and tones the muscles, but also strengthens and tones the internal organs, which are our source of this chi, or life force, or are what keeps us alive and healthy in other words. I say when learned properly, because Tai Chi is a subtle art with many levels and important principles which take time to understand and apply as you progress through each skill level, building upon your skill at whatever current level you are at, as is the case with any skill. It also looks easier than it is, as it takes time to not only develop leg strength in muscles that people rarely use, but sensitivity, or being able to read, feel and redirect an attacker's energy and uae their own force and power against them. This sensitivity development also has the added effect, along with the breathing and subtle energy exercises, of producing a great state of relaxed awareness, calmness, centredness, internal health and wellbeing. This in turn has many health benefots, including lowered blood pressure and even helps produce better sleep to name just two and, as part of Daoism (Taoism) has been associated with longevity since its creation in China many centuries ago.

Yang Short Form Mastery Class 

This is a 30 week program which will take you from start to finish through the Yang style short form, but is divided into 3 sets of 10 week sessions. So to get the best out of this program, please make sure to turn up to every lesson and as we will teach you a certain amount of moves, around 5, each week in the first 10 weeks so that you can learn to perform them properly. This includes learning the proper breathing, mental state and martial art applications of each move, which is learned fully in the 2nd set of 10 weeks and then expanded upon in the 3rd 10 week segment, alongside breathing exercises to help put you in the right mental state.

Where Will We Train?

I have a front room in my flat on Newlands Park, in Sydenham London SE26, very close to Penge East train station. It has been especially converted for training up to 4 students at a time. 
Other than that, when weather permits, we can also train in the nearby Alexandra park, also in Sydenham, SE26 and close to Penge East. Alternatively, I can travel to you in you have a space big enough for 2 people, or however many people you have that want to train, if you are within travelling distance. 

Booking and Cancellations 

Arrangements can be made in advance in order to fit in lessons around your schedule depending on when you are available, bearing in mind that although lessons can be booked one day or even a few hours in advance, according to my availability, a full 48 hours notice will be needed to reschedule or cancel lessons without forfeiting your payment, if you wish it to be carried over to your next lesson or rechedule a different day or time, as lessons are paid for in advance and can be paid for individually or for a full 10 week segment. Please also arrive 5 minutes early to any lessons so that we can start on time and that you get a full hour each lesson. But don't worry if you can't attend or miss one week, as we will do the best we can to catch you up on the next session, although you may need to book further lessons to complete the 10 week program if you miss one, if it is a group session, as we'll continue where we left off at your previous lesson, so it may then take you longer than 10 weeks, since we have a schedule for each of the 10 sessions. 

What Can I Expect? 

Once you're ready to begin, each lesson we'll start with a warm up, then a breathing exercise, followed by a standing meditation exercise, to prepare your body and put your mind in the correct relaxed, centred state required for proper practice of Tai Chi, so that you can first learn the correct movements of the Yang style Tai Chi short form, before then moving on to the martial art application of those moves.
Everything I teach is safe and effective, so you don't have to worry about developing an injury or anything like that. All you have to do is make sure you've eaten a normal standard meal, meaning nothing out of the ordinary, at least half an hour before your lesson, make sure to wear appropriate, comfortable clothing for exercising and that you just show up ready to enjoy the experience and the process of learning Tai Chi, and simply be present to it.
